Following the completion of a large scale LED streetlight installation, the city of Fairbanks, Alaska, is already contemplating its next project. The city has installed about 1,600 new LED streetlight fixtures on Fairbanks roadways and in the city of North Pole and will continue to install LED fixtures during 2011. City officials are planning to install another 1,000 LED streetlight fixtures in a new project. This second phase project has a target start date of late 2011 or early 2012.
“We are in the process of identifying funding sources for the next 1,000 fixtures, which may include going to the legislature,” said Donna Gardino, metropolitan planning operator for the city of Fairbanks. The estimated cost of the project is about $1.5 million. Before starting the proposed project, the city will go through a design process which will address environmental impact and lighting standards.
The city of Fairbanks operates 2,670 streetlights with annual energy costs of about $550,000 and approximately $75,000 in maintenance costs. The city has already realized energy savings of up to 50% with the new LED streetlight fixtures, and anticipates significantly reducing its maintenance costs with the longer life fixtures.
