Madison, Maine awaits final approval for funding through the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program to begin the retrofit of existing streetlights. The state of Maine was allocated $9,593,500 under the EECBG for energy efficiency projects. According to Joy Hikel, Economic Development Director for the city of Madison, “It will probably be another four to five months before we receive funding.” The plan is to retrofit 38 existing decorative pole lights with LED luminaires. The city of Madison requested $71,160 for the LED streetlight retrofit.

The LED streetlight retrofit should reduce electricity costs by as much as fifty percent and save up to 334,780 kilowatt hours of electricity over the life of each bulb.

Maine Public Utilities, which distributes EECBG funding to Maine’s municipal applicants, will also be the entity issuing the Request for Proposals (RFP) once stimulus funds are received. According to Hikel, “The deadline for grant submissions was extended to November 18, 2009, so it will be a few weeks before we get the results.” Once funding requests are received and processed, the grants will be awarded.
