Monticello, Minnesota, tests LED streetlights from Sternberg Lighting and Philips Hanover

The city of Monticello, Minnesota, is in the process of testing LED streetlight technology on city streets as part of an energy conservation effort. The city program involves test and evaluation of fixtures manufactured by Sternberg Lighting of Roselle, Illinois, and Philips Hanover of Littlestown, Pennsylvania. The LED streetlights were selected by the town council following recommendations from the city officials.
“In the short time that we have had the LED fixtures in place, we have already seen a 47% reduction in energy consumption compared with high pressure sodium streetlights,” said Bob Paschke, department of public works for the city of Monticello. The decorative LED fixtures were installed near the Monticello Community Center and include pathway and roadway streetlights. In addition to substantial energy cost savings, city officials also anticipate savings from reduced maintenance costs due to the longer lamp life of LED fixtures.
“Public works officials are promoting an additional study to the town council which we anticipate starting in August,” said Paschke. The proposed project may involve LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by Phillips Hadco, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, for a new neighborhood installation. According to city officials, the city of Monticello intends to seek federal funding for additional LED streetlight installations on the major corridors. “We are definitely interested in moving ahead with more LED streetlight projects,” said Paschke.
