Allentown, Pennsylvania, installs 53 LED streetlights from Cooper Lighting and GE

The city of Allentown, Pennsylvania, has installed fifty three LED streetlights in a pilot program to test and evaluate solid state lighting technology. The project is funded by the local energy supplier, PPL Electric Utilities. The city of Allentown is currently working with PPL Electric Utilities on a revised tariff to reflect the reduced energy consumption of LED streetlights. The utility is awaiting approval of the tariff from the state regulatory board.
“We are very happy with the installation, and in fact, we have had some of the fixtures up for about two months and have had no negative public feedback,” said Ronald Penrose, traffic control superintendent for the city of Allentown. The installation involves 95 watt to 157 watt LED streetlight fixtures from Cooper Lighting and GE.
The project is located in the downtown business area of Allentown, and is being monitored by PPL. The LED streetlights are not metered, but Penrose anticipates seeing energy consumption reduced by at least fifty percent. “We are extremely satisfied with the light distribution of the LED fixtures,” said Penrose. The LED streetlight fixtures replaced existing 150 watt and 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights.
The city of Allentown is lit by nearly 8,000 city owned and maintained streetlights. The annual budget for electricity consumed by Allentown streetlights is $484,000. Penrose anticipates significant savings from the reduced energy consumption and longer life of the LED streetlight fixtures. “We will pursue additional streetlight replacements based on the success of this project,” said Penrose.
