American Canyon, California, awarded $88,498 for LED streetlights

The city of American Canyon, California, has received an award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for the installation of LED streetlights on the city’s roadways. The federal award, in the amount of $88,498, is locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). Only city-owned streetlights will be replaced with LED fixtures.
The LED fixtures will be deployed along residential roadways in newer American Canyon subdivisions, the City Hall area, and at the wastewater treatment plant. Older residential areas are lit by streetlights owned and maintained by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), and are not slated for retrofit or replacement.
By making the switch to LED streetlights, American Canyon hopes to realize savings of up to 60 percent over existing technology, according to one public works official. Initially, the primary savings will be from reduced maintenance as a result of the longer life of the LED fixture. Increased energy efficiency and reduced energy consumption will also result in savings for the city of American Canyon, according to city officials.
In accordance with federal and CEC guidelines, American Canyon is developing a request for proposals (RFP) to solicit competitive bids for the LED streetlight project. Once the RFP is released, the bid will be advertised in the Vallejo Times Herald as well as on the city of American Canyon website. City officials expect the RFP to be completed within the next few weeks.
