Ames, Iowa, plans to conduct an LED streetlight pilot using $15,750 in federal stimulus funds.

Ames is the recipient of a $15,750 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The funds will be used to conduct an LED streetlight pilot project. The demonstration project will help Ames officials test and evaluate LED streetlight technology in preparation for larger scale projects in the city in the future.

The city of Ames operates a municipal utility, which means that the reduced power consumption of LED streetlights will directly benefit local taxpayers. LED streetlights typically consume approximately 50% less power than traditional street and roadway lights. Ames currently owns and maintains the city’s 6,200 streetlights.

According to Mark Imhoff, electrical engineer for the city of Ames, “We are looking to identify the best products from the most reliable manufacturers of LED streetlights. Through our bid specifications, we hope to narrow the field somewhat.” A Request for Proposal (RFP) will most likely be issued within the next several months.

In addition to LED streetlights, the city is also looking to use a $9,000 EECBG award for LED parking lot lights, said Imhoff.
