Ann Arbor, Michigan, to purchase 500 LED streetlights from Lumecon using $315,968 in EECBG funds

The City Council of Ann Arbor, Michigan, approved the purchase of 500 cobra head LED streetlight fixtures from manufacturer Lumecon for installation on the city’s arterial roadways. The $315,968 LED streetlight project represents the third phase of a long-term LED streetlight deployment program in Ann Arbor. The installation process is expected to take six to eight months, and city officials anticipate 50% to 70% cost savings resulting from reduced energy consumption and decreased maintenance requirements. The program is funded by the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.
Lumecon, L.L.C., a fixture manufacturer based in Farmington Hills, Michigan, was one of eleven bidders responding to Ann Arbor’s request for proposals. Only three of the bidders met the photometric specifications set by the city of Ann Arbor.
According to the city, “Lumecon was the only vendor to respond to all bid requirements. One of the most important requirements of the bid was an in-situ report.” The city of Ann Arbor combined in-situ LED temperature measurement and manufacturers’ LM-80 test data to calculate degradation of light output and product end-of-life. The in-situ testing was performed by independent laboratories. The city of Ann Arbor specified a maximum in-situ temperature increase of 55.3° C, and the Lumecon fixture was the only product able to meet this requirement.
Over 1,750 LED streetlight fixtures will light the streets of Ann Arbor when the third phase installation is completed later this year.
