The city of Arlington, Massachusetts, has been awarded funds for energy efficient projects, including LED streetlight deployment. Arlington has been designated a Green Community by the state of Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) has awarded $170,000 to the city through the Green Community program. Arlington will provide an additional $100,000 from local funding sources.
A total of $270,000 has been allocated for the purchase and installation of approximately 537 LED streetlights.
According to city officials, Arlington is considering a small pilot to test a variety of LED streetlights. The pilot will allow the city to evaluate wattage and other characteristics of each fixture.
Initial evaluations by energy efficiency experts indicate that the switch to LED streetlight technology will reduce electricity consumption by up to 50 percent. Calculations determined that replacing the 537 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures could reduce energy consumption by 95,387 kw/h.
“Based on funding, our long term goal is to eventually change all of our remaining streetlights to LED streetlights,” said Adam Chapdelaine, deputy town manager for the town of Arlington. There are approximately 3,300 existing streetlights in Arlington.
The location of the 537 LED streetlight installation has not yet been determined, but potential project locations are being evaluated. A request for proposals is expected in late August or early September and will be advertised in the local newspaper, at the town hall, and in a goods and services bulletin for state-wide vendor access, according to Chapdelaine.
