The city of Auburn, Alabama, recently concluded a pilot program to test LED streetlight technology for city roadways. The pilot involved both decorative and cobrahead streetlights in a field test which was conducted by a lighting consultant. LED fixtures evaluated included products manufactured by Relume, Holophane, Beacon, Visionaire and King. As a result, the city of Auburn is pursuing a larger scale installation of pedestrian signals, decorative fixtures and traditional roadway fixtures. The effort will be funded by an award of $238,427 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.
The city of Auburn’s goal is to retrofit a number of decorative pedestrian streetlights and traditional cobrahead roadway fixtures with LED technology. “This project will be a multi-part installation focused on LED pedestrian signals and will also include decorative and cobrahead streetlights. During the pilot field test we learned that the vendors which offered a retrofit option compared to a replacement option seemed to fit better with our needs,” said Brandy Ezelle, traffic engineer for the city of Auburn. Based on manufacturer data and lighting designs prepared by a consultant, city officials expect significant energy savings from the LED streetlight installation. A portion of Auburn’s streetlights are currently metered, therefore energy savings would be immediate. Discussions about revised tariffs which reflect the lower energy consumption of LED streetlights are ongoing with Alabama Power and Light, the city’s energy provider. “Based on the responses to the bid, we are hopeful that we can replace as many fixtures as possible with this award,” said Ezelle.
An Invitation to Bid, for the purchase and installation of LED streetlight fixtures, was issued this week with all submissions due by February 8, 2011. A pre-bidders meeting is scheduled in Auburn for January 25, 2011 at 171 North Ross Street. The bid documents are available here.
