The city of Beaumont, California, is entering the third year of LED streetlight installation program. This long-term initiative was started in 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2011. A three year contract was competitively bid and signed with Beaumont Electric, an independent electrical contractor, to purchase and install the energy efficient fixtures. The city has already installed nearly two hundred King Luminaire LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by the StressCrete Group, located in Ohio, and plans to install an additional 32 fixtures installation in 2011.
The new LED streetlight fixtures, attached to black, decorative poles, replaced existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlamps attached to wooden poles. “This project was not a retrofit, rather it was a replacement of Southern California Edison (SCE) owned streetlights. The city of Beaumont now owns the new streetlights, and it was important to update the look and efficiency of the fixtures,” said Jim Love, of Beaumont Electric. Additionally, the new LED streetlight fixtures meet the city’s dark sky ordinance. Funding for the streetlight replacement project came from local city funds and through an energy partners program with SCE. “The city is using about 30% less energy for streetlighting, and with a manufacturer’s guarantee of a 50,000 hour lamp life, the city will save on streetlight maintenance and labor,” said Love.
Before choosing LED technology for the city’s streetlights, officials assessed induction technology concurrently with LEDs. The city tested several fixtures and took readings to determine which technology would provide the best illumination at highest efficiency. Beaumont city officials also analyzed the city’s illumination needs to ensure that appropriate fixtures were installed to prevent overlighting and unnecessary lighting. According to city officials, LED streetlights are helping the city of Beaumont reach its goals of reduced energy consumption, dark sky compliance and a smaller carbon footprint.
