Belmont, California, to spend $133,973 of federal stimulus funds on LED streetlights

The city of Belmont, California, will launch a 200 LED streetlight replacement initiative using funds awarded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The award of $133,973 will enable the city to replace inefficient, high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights and with energy efficient LED fixtures.
The Belmont public works department has not identified the exact location of the streetlight replacement project. According to city officials, likely locations include Ralston Avenue and El Camino Real. Final locations will be determined shortly by the Belmont city council.
Rick Locke, field supervisor over traffic and lighting for the city of Belmont, stated that most of the HPS roadway lighting slated for replacement are 200 watt and 250 watt fixtures. Locke plans to replace at least 200 HPS streetlights but hopes to replace a higher number of lights by taking advantage of a competitive bidding process. As part of the city’s environmental and green initiatives, Belmont’s long-term goal is to replace all city streetlights with LED fixtures.
“We hope to get this project started within two to three months,” said Locke. City officials would like to begin the project by late summer 2010 and complete it by early 2011. Belmont anticipates annual savings to the city of over $12,000 and as much as a 50% reduction in energy consumption by switching to the energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures.
