The cities of Biggs, Healdsburg, Ukiah, and Gridley, California, plan to deploy LED streetlights using $203,334 in federal stimulus funds.
With the assistance of the Northern California Power Agency Collaborative (NCPA), a non-profit agency that represents and provides support to seventeen member communities in Northern California, the cities have been awarded $167,927 in funding from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG).
The funds will be used for the direct purchase of LED streetlights, and is locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). The town of Gridley, California received a separate EECBG award of $35,407, and, as a member of the NCPA, will utilize that network for the purchase and installation of the LED streetlights.
According to Scott Thomashefsky, regulatory affairs manager for the NCPA, “Cities will use their own labor for the installation of their new LED streetlights, but we are helping them with identifying and purchasing the fixtures. The CEC understands the administrative burden placed on these small communities, which is why the award is for a direct purchase.” The applicants to the EECBG did not have to identify a specific vendor of LED streetlights, but did have to provide specifications required of the LED fixtures.
“This particular award is for a collaborative project for the cities of Biggs, Healdsburg and Ukiah. Gridley received a separate award. These cities also all have municipal utilities,” said Thomashefsky. The award will be used to replace existing high pressure sodium vapor (HPSV) streetlights with LED fixtures.
