Boston, Massachusetts, issues RFP and plans to install 1,000 pendant-style LED streetlights

As part of a municipal plan to increase energy efficiency, the city of Boston, Massachusetts, is planning a large scale installation of decorative pendant-style LED streetlights. The project, which is scheduled to start in early 2012, will take place on public streets, parks, playgrounds and open spaces. The Boston pendant-style fixture is consistent with the historical streetlighting found throughout the city of Boston. Plans involve the installation of 1,000 LED streetlight fixtures.
According to the Boston Transportation Department, the city has calculated that converting existing mercury vapor and high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights to solid-state lighting technology will reduce the city’s energy use by approximately 50 percent. Greenhouse gas emissions will also be significantly reduced. The proposed project targets municipally-owned streetlight fixtures.
Product specifications state the proposed LED fixtures must be LM-79 and LM-80 tested, and documentation must be supplied. The fixture must also contain approximately 126 LED diodes. Photometric requirements include a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4500 Kelvin and a lumen efficacy of 64.3 lm/watt for the 165 watt fixture and 56.5 lm/watt for the 200 watt fixture. All manufacturers must supply a minimum of a five year warranty.
