Boerne, Texas, tests and evaluates LED streetlights from GreenStar

Boerne, Texas, has installed eleven LED streetlights in the first step of evaluating energy efficient streetlight technology. The pilot installation is funded using city operating funds and is scheduled to be completed by mid-November 2010. The LED streetlight fixtures installed in the pilot are from local manufacturer, GreenStar.
City officials chose the English Oaks subdivision in Boerne to test the energy efficient fixtures alongside existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights. The LED fixtures, consisting of 36 LEDs and 54 LEDs, were installed on two separate streets and are being compared with existing 100 watt and 250 watt HPS fixtures. The Department of Public Works is soliciting feedback from the general public through an online form on the city’s website.
“We are metering all of the streetlights in this installation so that we can get accurate data on energy consumption,” said Michael Mann, public works director for the city of Boerne. The remaining 500 streetlights in the city of Boerne are unmetered. The city currently pays a flat rate for its streetlights to the municipal utility. “Right now, we are assessing what our actual illumination needs are, and we believe that when we identify the correct levels, which are probably lower than what we currently have, that will lead to additional energy cost savings,” said Mann. The city of Boerne has a dark sky ordinance, further motivating city officials to find correct and adequate illumination levels.
