Brookline, Massachusetts, testing LED Roadway streetlights in pilot program

The town of Brookline, Massachusetts is preparing to launch a pilot program to test LED streetlight technology on city streets. The city will use its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award to purchase and install fifty new LED streetlight fixtures. The EECBG award, totaling $33,000, is funded through the US Department of Energy (DOE) and is locally administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.
This project is considered by city officials to be a first phase pilot program to test and evaluate LED streetlight technology. The city will be purchasing and installing Type II LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by LED Roadway of Canada. These LED fixtures will be used to replace existing high pressure sodium streetlights ranging from 100 watts to 250 watts in power consumption.
According to town officials, approximately 90% of Brookline’s streetlights are not metered and are billed at a flat rate by NStar, the town’s electricity supplier. A component of the pilot program will be to renegotiate rates with NStar which reflect the significantly lower energy consumption of LED streetlights.
“If the pilot program proves itself to be worthwhile, then we will start looking for additional funding to retrofit the remaining streetlights in Brookline,” said Peter Ditto, director of engineering and transportation for the town of Brookline. The town’s long term environmental goals include deployment of energy efficient streetlights and the overall reduction of energy consumption. If the results of the pilot are successful, over 2,500 existing HPS streetlights in Brookline will be considered for replacement.
