Brundidge, Alabama, to use $81,000 grant to purchase LED streetlights

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) recently approved federal funding for additional LED streetlight installations in the city of Brundidge, Alabama. Previously, a federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award, issued in 2010, was used to purchase and install 104 cobrahead streetlight fixtures and 34 decorative LED streetlight fixtures. Subsequently, the city received a second EECBG award, valued at $69,950, which will be combined with city funds of $11,531. The combined funds will be used to purchase approximately 100 LED fixtures for the city’s second phase of energy efficient streetlight installations.
“We consider ourselves leaders in adopting energy efficient technology, and LED streetlights fit our current and future plans for saving energy,” said Britt Thomas, city manager for the city of Brundidge. The first phase of LED streetlights replaced 104 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights on Main Street with LED fixtures manufactured by General Electric Lighting, of East Cleveland, Ohio and American Electric Lighting, of Granville, Ohio. The city also installed 34 decorative LED streetlights in the downtown area which were manufactured by Holophane Lighting, of Granville, Ohio. American Electric Lighting and Holophane are both part of Acuity Brands.
“We are currently evaluating the best fixture to meet our illumination needs for the second installation. We will have a variety of vendors demonstrate their products which will help with the evaluation process,” said Thomas. The city is working with an engineer to assist in identifying illumination needs for the targeting roadways in the new installation. The second deployment will replace the remaining streetlights on Main Street (Alabama Highway 93) with LED fixtures, and also target a variety of neighborhoods in the city. The city of Brundidge has thirty three miles of illuminated roadways.
“Once we complete due diligence and develop project specifications, we plan on issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for the project. The goal is to issue the RFP in late December and begin installation in January with a target completion date for Spring 2012,” said Thomas. RFPs are posted on the City of Brundidge website. “We will continue to explore and evaluate doing additional installations of LED streetlights. Right now we are driven by economics, but, as prices come down, we will be able to do more projects,” said Thomas.
