The California towns of Windsor, Cotati and Cloverdale were collectively awarded a $223,773 energy efficiency grant which the municipalities will use to replace high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting with LED streetlights. The funds were received from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The town of Windsor is serving as the lead coordinator for the project, according to Windsor senior planner, Kevin Thompson. The regional utility, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), provided assistance with the technical portion of the grant application.
The initiative’s goal is to replace 231 town owned HPS streetlights in Windsor, 81 HPS streetlights in Cloverdale and 36 HPS streetlights in Cotati. City officials hope that a competitive bidding process may result in a higher number of streetlights being replaced award funds. In addition to LED streetlight replacement, the town of Windsor will also replace approximately 105 acorn fixtures in parks. “We hope to have the project ready to bid in about six weeks,” said Thompson.
If the project is successful, the municipalities’ long term goal is to replace all city-owned streetlights, according to Thompson. Currently, city-owned streetlights are not metered, but rather the city pays a flat rate for energy consumption. With the switch to LED streetlights, the towns of Windsor, Cotati and Cloverdale will benefit from the revised rate structure for energy efficient lighting established by PG&E.
