Central City, Nebraska, awarded $235,836 for LED streetlight project

A federal stimulus award and local matching funds have been awarded to Central City, Nebraska, for an LED streetlight replacement project. Funding of $235,836 will be used to replace approximately 400 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures throughout the city. Central City is combining federal stimulus funds of $179,088 with local matching funds of $56,748. The federal funds were awarded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG award is locally administered by the Nebraska Energy Office (NEO).

As a municipal utility, Central City will immediately benefit from the reduced energy consumption of its new LED fixtures. Energy consumption of LED streetlights is calculated to be approximately 50 percent of HPS streetlights.

“We are eager to get started on this project so that we can analyze all the results of the new LED fixtures and accurately evaluate what the real costs and benefits are,” said Chris Anderson, city administrator for the city of Central City. The city has already conducted a small pilot project where two fixtures from manufacturer EcoFit Lighting were installed and evaluated. According to Anderson, the pilot project did not generate any negative feedback from the community.

Based on available funding, the long term goals of Central City are to replace all existing HPS streetlights with LED fixtures. The city currently owns and maintains approximately 1,000 HPS streetlights.

City officials would like to begin the LED streetlight project as quickly as possible, with an anticipated start date of September 2010. Anderson would like to issue a request for proposals (RFP) in August 2010. The project targets completion at the end of 2011.
