Cheyenne, Wyoming, evaluates LED streetlight technology from Leotek and BetaLED

The city of Cheyenne, Wyoming, has started evaluating LED streetlight technology as the first phase of a potential energy efficient lighting project.
The city has installed a six fixtures in a pilot project to assess and test the energy efficient technology and calculate potential energy and cost savings. City engineers are testing LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting, and Leotek of Milpitas, Calfornia. The city will eventually evaluate fixtures from other manufacturers.
City officials are working closely with Cheyenne Fuel, Power and Light, an investor owned utility, in assessing the suitability of LED streetlights for the city of Cheyenne. Currently the city pays a flat, monthly rate for about 4,700 existing streetlights. The annual cost for streetlight energy use and maintenance is approximately $947,000. City engineers hope to reduce that amount significantly if the pilot LED streetlight fixtures perform according to manufacturer specifications, and the city is able to negotiate a revised tariff with the utility.
According to Tia Raamot, traffic engineer for the city of Cheyenne, “The city has green initiatives which include energy efficient lighting, and the city of Cheyenne will look for grants to fund a potential LED streetlight project.”
