Chico, California, awarded $650,000 for LED streetlights

The city of Chico, California, is preparing to launch an LED streetlight project which will target approximately 20% of the city’s existing streetlights for replacement. Chico has received an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, of which $650,000 will be used to purchase and install LED streetlight fixtures. The LED luminaires will replace existing city-owned high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures located throughout the metropolitan area. City officials are working with representatives from energy supplier Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) on a full streetlight analysis and inventory.
“The city is in the process of developing a climate action plan, and included in that is the long term goal of eventually replacing all city-owned streetlights,” said Ruben Martinez, general services director for the city of Chico. Current inventory indicates that there are approximately 5,500 existing city-owned streetlights, and over 2,000 additional streetlights owned by PG&E, Butte County and CalTrans.
“By replacing our existing HPS streetlights with LED fixtures, we will reduce energy consumption by at least 40%, and our overall costs associated with all of our streetlights will decline by about 15%,” said Martinez. Chico’s city budget includes $750,000 for the cost and maintenance of its streetlights.
The city’s goal is to begin installation of the new LED streetlight fixtures in the next two months, after all purchase and procurement guidelines are confirmed and finalized. City officials are reviewing EECBG procurement guidelines to ensure accuracy and compliance.
