Chula Vista, California, switches project from induction to LED streetlights in phase that will use 4,600 GE Lighting fixtures

The California Energy Commission recently approved a modification to the scope of an energy efficient streetlight project in Chula Vista, California.
City officials requested a modification which involved a switch from induction streetlights to LED streetlight fixtures for Chula Vista’s Phase I streetlight retrofit of 4,600 fixtures. The CEC approved the switch in streetlighting technology and also granted a no cost extension on the $2,051,600 loan which is funded by a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) fund.
“GE Lighting has been approved to supply the fixtures for Phase I of the city’s residential streetlight installation and the installation is expected to begin within a month’s time,” said Robert LeClair, project manager for the city of Chula Vista. According to the CEC, the estimated payback for the project is just over ten years. The city is expected to save almost $200,000 annually in energy costs. Evaluation of the use of adaptive controls will also help city officials accurately assess actual energy consumption thus leading to additional savings as rate structures are negotiated with local utility, San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E).
“In parallel to Phase I, the city of Chula Vista is already preparing its Phase II installation of LED roadway streetlights. The city is moving forward to secure approval to allocate Qualified Energy Conservation Bond (QECB) funding for the project. Phase II will most likely be open to all qualified bidders,” said LeClair. City officials have targeted the start date of the project for the new fiscal year in July 2011. The city’s total streetlight inventory currently includes approximately 9,014 high pressure sodium (HPS) luminaires.
