Clarksville, Tennessee, starts installation of 350 LED streetlights from BetaLED

In early October, the city of Clarksville, Tennessee, started work on the city’s first LED streetlight replacement project. This deployment is considered a pilot project to evaluate and test the new technology and determine the actual cost and energy savings of an active installation. The three hundred fifty streetlight replacement project is funded by a $250,000 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.
The project was awarded to Stones River Electric, a local electrical contractor, which will be purchasing and installing the LED streetlight fixtures. The LED fixture chosen for the project is manufactured by Wisconsin company BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting.
Clarksville city officials identified Providence Boulevard, an arterial roadway, as a unique location to test the new technology. According to Chris Cowan, traffic engineer with the street department of Clarksville, “This is an area where quality lighting is important, especially as it is a main arterial roadway leading into town.” All high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures on Providence Blvd, as well as those in adjacent neighborhoods, will be replaced with LED fixtures.
The Clarksville Department of Electricity is the municipal utility which supplies power to the city of Clarksville. The utility has revised its tariff structure to reflect the reduced energy consumption of LED streetlights. With approximately seventy five percent of the city’s streetlights billed at a flat rate, the revised tariff structure will result in significant savings. The city currently owns and maintains about 10,000 streetlights. Results from the first installation of LED streetlights will help city officials define future plans for the use of energy efficient streetlights.
