Clayton, California, receives $65,611 for LED streetlights

Clayton, California, plans to install 95 LED streetlights as part of a pilot program to test and evaluate the energy efficient fixtures. The LED streetlight project will be funded by a $65,611 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG award is administered by the California Energy Commission.

The new LED streetlight installations will be located on roadways from Oakhurst Drive to Mitchell Canyon Road. The new LED fixtures will replace existing city-owned 200 watt and 250 watt high pressure sodium streetlights.

“We are looking mainly at the energy cost savings of the LED streetlights. Clayton is already very efficient and cost effective with its streetlight maintenance program, so the reduced energy consumption of LEDs is where we anticipate the highest savings,” said John Johnston, maintenance supervisor for the city of Clayton. City officials calculate that the switch to LED streetlights will save the city up to $6,000 per year in reduced energy consumption.

According to Johnston, this LED streetlight project will be a first step in introducing the concept to the Clayton community in anticipation of further streetlight replacements. The city currently owns and maintains approximately 1,200 streetlights, including a significant number of decorative streetlights.
