The city of Columbia City, Indiana, has received $249,504 to be used for an LED streetlight replacement project. The award is from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Grant (EECBG) program which is locally administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development. The EECBG funds will be used to replace approximately 420 existing streetlights with LED fixtures.
City officials have designated the Columbia City downtown and residential neighborhoods for the streetlight replacement program. The upcoming project will replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor cobra head streetlights with LED cobra head fixtures. The LED streetlight deployment will replace all of Columbia City’s streetlights, with the exception of 116 decorative streetlights which are already considered energy efficient.
Larry Whetstone, electrical superintendent for the city of Columbia City, projects energy cost savings and greater energy efficiency through the use of LED streetlights and is eager to begin the project. According to Whetstone, “we have calculated about $19,000 per year in energy cost savings which will benefit our community tremendously.” Columbia City will issue a request for proposals (RFP) in summer 2010, with an anticipated start date of fall 2010 for the LED streetlight project.
