This week, the Columbus City Council announced the winning bid for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funded LED installation in Columbus, Wisconsin. With a bid of $259,557 for the project, GEXPRO, an electrical distributor located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was the low bidder. The total EECBG award for the project is $159,200 with the remaining $100,000 coming from local matching funds.
“The fixture that will be installed is the LEDway LED streetlight, manufactured by BetaLED,” said Steve Sobiek, director of economic development and environmental sustainability for the city of Columbus. BetaLED is a division of Ruud Lighting located in Wisconsin. The projected installation will include 100 watt and 150 watt equivalent fixtures to replace over 500 existing streetlights.
“The electrical supplier has ordered the LED streetlight fixtures and we plan on beginning the installation of the new LED streetlights in January, weather permitting,” said Sobiek. The goal is to complete the installation by Spring or Summer 2011. According to Sobiek, the city’s long term goal is to replace all existing streetlights with the energy efficient technology of LEDs. The city currently has approximately 642 existing streetlights.
