The city of Des Moines, Iowa, will use $150,000 of federal and local funds to replace existing roadway lighting with LED streetlights.

The Iowa Office of Energy Independence (OEI) recently announced statewide awards for energy efficiency projects funded through the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The city of Des Moines, Iowa, received $75,000 from the EECBG, which will be used to replace 87 existing streetlights with LED streetlights. The city of Des Moines will provide matching funds of $75,000 which will be added to the EECBG award.

The proposed project will involve replacement of existing streetlights with LED streetlights on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway between Ingersoll Ave. and SW 16th St.

According to Jennifer Dakovich, principal traffic engineer for the city of Des Moines, “There are plans to solicit competitive bids.” City officials anticipate that replacing existing streetlights with LED technology will reduce energy consumption by 50%, and the longer lives of LED fixtures will create additional cost savings.
