Dixon, California, awarded $97,561 for LED streetlight project

The city of Dixon, California, was recently awarded an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award of $97,561, which will be used to deploy LED streetlights. The funds will be used to replace 205 existing, high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures. The EECBG awards, a program of the U.S. Department of Energy, is locally administered by the California Energy Commission. Both the purchase and the installation cost of the LED streetlight fixtures will be funded by the EECBG grant.
The Dixon Public Works department has evaluated a variety of energy efficient streetlight technologies, including LED and induction. The city-tested streetlights were supplied by a number of manufacturers, including LED Roadway and BetaLED. The pilot, which lasted over one year, also assessed induction streetlights. “We looked at both technologies and for multiple reasons, including environmental impact, and we decided to go with LED streetlights,” said Martha Jensen, management analyst for the Dixon Public Works Department.
The LED streetlight fixtures will initially be deployed in older neighborhoods with poor lighting. These neighborhoods have widely spaced poles and will benefit from the more effective and energy efficient LED streetlights, according to Jensen.
Long term plans for the city of Dixon include the replacement of all city streetlights with energy efficient technology. City officials continue to seek funding on an ongoing basis for the eventual replacement of nearly 1,600 additional streetlights.
