The town of East Lyme, Connecticut, has received funding for the continuation of the town’s ongoing Main Street revitalization program. A $400,000 state grant was provided through the state of Connecticut’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP). STEAP awards fund small community economic development and conservation projects throughout the state. In the initial phase of the revitalization, the city installed 54 new LED streetlight fixtures along the Main Street corridor.
“This project replaced existing high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures with LEDs and we are already seeing a decrease in energy costs and better light distribution,” said Bill Scheer, engineer for the town of East Lyme.
The fixtures used in the installation are manufactured by Architectural Area Lighting, of City of Industry, California. The decorative post-top luminaire is an 80 watt equivalent fixture. The current STEAP award is being considered for additional LED streetlight installations. “We continue to evaluate the rapid technology changes with LEDs, and have not yet solidified our goals regarding future installations, but may install more,” said Scheer.
All of East Lyme’s 1,455 streetlights are owned and maintained by Connecticut Light and Power (CL&P). The utility participates in energy efficiency incentive programs through the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. The Fund promotes the efficient use of energy and reduction of pollution. According to CL&P, special incentives are available for municipal customers installing LED fixtures. Only fixtures approved by the Design Lights Consortium are eligible for incentives.
