East Palo Alto, California, receives $180,214 for LED streetlights

The city of East Palo Alto, California is planning to replace 370 existing low pressure sodium (LPS) streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures using an $180,214 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The federally funded EECBG award is locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC).

East Palo Alto city officials are eager to begin the streetlight replacement project in various city locations to improve existing, sub-standard lighting. “The city still has rural streetlight standards since it was part of the unincorporated part of San Mateo County,” said city engineer, Kamal Fallaha. Over $2 million in additional funds will be needed to purchase the additional streetlights required to bring East Palo Alto up to current, urban lighting standards.

The EECBG-funded LED streetlight project is scheduled to begin September 2010. The city of East Palo Alto has not tested LED streetlights and is considering the deployment of a small pilot project which will be used to solicit resident input on the new LED technology. East Palo Alto is considering a pilot project and will make a decision in a few weeks.

East Palo Alto city officials anticipate issuing a request for proposals (RFP) by mid-July 2010. “We are going to the city council on July 6 to obtain authorization to advertise the project for bid,” said Fallaha. The RFP will be publicized on the city’s website, in the local newspaper, and in the Builders Exchange offices.
