The Board of Supervisors in Exeter Township, Pennsylvania, has approved funding of $233,975 for the purchase of 470 LED streetlights to replace all existing township-owned streetlight fixtures. Funding for the streetlights combines local funds and rebates negotiated with Exeter Township’s energy supplier, First Energy.
Township officials anticipate spending approximately $200,000 of local funds which will be combined with a rebate of $33,975 from First Energy. In addition to the rebate for the installation of LED streetlight fixtures, Exeter Township negotiated a monthly flat fee rate for township-owned streetlights. The negotiated rate structure coupled with the reduced energy consumption of LED fixtures will result in annual savings of $69,170 for the township. “These savings, along with rebates from First Energy, mean that our calculated payback period is only three years and eight months,” said Doris Heckman, administrator for Exeter Township.
The streetlight replacement program is one component of Exeter Township’s long-term plan to reduce energy consumption and develop good environmental practices. The existing streetlights which are targeted for replacement are sodium vapor and mercury vapor fixtures. All of the existing streetlights will be recycled and all functioning lamps will be offered to neighboring communities to be used as replacement parts. “No part of our old streetlights will end up in the landfill,” said Heckman.
The township intends to purchase the LED streetlight fixtures through a state purchasing program. However, township officials will issue a request for proposals (RFP) for the installation of the fixtures. The LED fixtures to be installed are cobra head type and will be placed on existing free standing poles. Township officials plan to issue the RFP in late August or early September, and it will be advertised in the local newspaper, The Reading Eagle Press, and on the Exeter Township website.
