Fairhope, Alabama, tests LED streetlights from Holophane Lighting and Cooper Lighting

The city of Fairhope, Alabama, is actively testing and evaluating energy efficient LED streetlight technology. The city’s first installation included decorative LED fixtures with a subsequent installation of cobrahead LED fixtures. The decorative streetlights are manufactured by Holophane Lighting of Granville, Ohio, and were used to replace some existing decorative streetlights as well as in new installations. The cobrahead streetlights are manufactured by Cooper Lighting of Peachtree City, Georgia.
“We have been very happy with the results but continue to evaluate the technology,” said Scott Sligh, electrical superintendent for the city of Fairhope. The city is exploring a variety of applications of LED technology including an installation of LED fixtures on the city’s pier. According to Sligh, this installation has been extremely popular with the public. City officials continue to monitor streetlight performance through light readings and visual evaluation.
“The long term performance of LED streetlights is what we are mostly concerned with,” said Sligh. Long term performance and stability of manufacturers in the market place are two factors which city officials are weighing before pursuing additional installations. “Another concern for our city is the performance of the new fixtures in our specific weather conditions. It’s important for us to know that these fixtures will continue to perform well even in extremely high heat,” said Sligh.
