Fallon, Nevada, is set to launch a city-wide LED streetlight replacement project using $650,000 in funds from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Fallon is preparing a large scale project which will include project design, procurement and installation of 640 LED streetlights.
Earlier this year, the city evaluated a small pilot project which tested the LED streetlight technology of three manufacturers. The success of the pilot inspired city engineers to pursue the EECBG award. The amount of the award will be sufficient to replace all existing streetlights in Fallon.
City Engineer Jim Souba has calculated the payback of the project to be approximately six years. “The payback was initially calculated as a bit longer, but when we factored in reduced maintenance costs, the longer life cycle of the fixture and reduced energy consumption, we were able reach this number,” said Souba. Total energy savings were calculated to be about 450 KwH per year. The city of Fallon owns, maintains and operates its electricity distribution, so the reduced energy consumption of the LED streetlights will immediately benefit the citizens of the city.
According to Souba, the city of Fallon will advertise the bid in about 6 months and will follow federal procurement guidelines. The announcement of the bid will be made in area newspapers and will be advertised as a construction contract.
