The city council of Florence, Colorado, is evaluating a proposal for the installation of LED streetlights. The pilot project, which will be funded by the local utility, Black Hills Energy, if approved, could be installed shortly after a vote by the city council in the first week of January. The proposed deployment would involve twenty 250 watt equivalent LED streetlight fixtures installed along two blocks of Main Street and would be in place for six months for testing and evaluation.

If the city council approves the installation, Black Hills Energy would install and maintain the LED streetlight fixtures which would be metered to determine actual energy consumption, according to Dori Williams, city clerk for the city of Florence. All city streetlights are owned and maintained by Black Hills Energy. The city currently pays a flat fee based on wattage and fixture type and hopes that the lower wattage and reduced energy consumption of the LED fixtures will result in savings for the city. The annual streetlight budget is $55,000.

Black Hills Energy has an additional LED streetlight pilot installation in Pueblo, Colorado, which will be used in conjunction with the proposed Florence installation to determine energy consumption, performance and quality of the energy efficient lighting fixtures. Preliminary findings indicate that the Pueblo LED streetlight installation has resulted in a 40% decrease in energy consumption, according to Tom Kirkpatrick, senior manager for external affairs at Black Hills Energy. A report of the utility’s findings is expected to be released in about six months, and will be available on the participating city and utility websites. “We want to be able to educate our customers in the best ways to conserve energy, and we anticipate that LED streetlights will help us meet our utility’s goals for reduced energy output and cleaner air,” said Kirkpatrick.
