Fremont, California, uses EECBG award for LED streetlight installations

The first of two LED streetlight installation projects is now underway in Fremont, California. The initial project, which is part of a larger roadway widening program, includes the installation of approximately 50 LED streetlight fixtures on Osgood Road. The second project, which is proposed for Stevenson Road, will replace approximately 260 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures. Both projects are funded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.
City officials plan to announce the winner of the current bid for LED streetlight purchase and installation on February 8. The project is funded by a $190,000 EECBG award, and should commence soon after the award is announced. The 260 LED streetlight fixtures are expected to save almost $10,000 per year in energy costs and reduce electricity consumption by 79,000 kw/H.
Fremont’s current installation on Osgood Road is focused on replacing existing 150 watt to 250 watt HPS cobrahead streetlights. The city is installing LED fixtures manufactured by GE Lighting and expects to reduce energy consumption by approximately 30 percent.
“These projects fit within the goals of Fremont’s green initiatives. Our goal is to replace even more of our HPS cobrahead streetlights with LEDs, and we will also look at eventually replacing our decorative fixtures,” said David Huynh, senior transportation engineer for the city of Fremont. In preparation for the larger EECBG funded installations, the city conducted a short term pilot study which tested a total of twenty five LED streetlight fixtures from three different manufacturers.
