Greenville, South Carolina, to test LED streetlights from Hubbell Lighting and GE

The city of Greenville, South Carolina, has launched the state’s first energy efficient LED streetlight program. Greenville, in cooperation with GE Lighting, Hubbell Lighting, and Duke Energy, has installed four different styles of pedestrian fixtures on one city block and is in the process of installing cobrahead style fixtures. The pedestrian fixtures were supplied by Hubbell Lighting of Greenville, South Carolina, and the cobrahead fixtures will be provided by GE Lighting, which is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, and operates a facility in Greenville, South Carolina.
“We are fortunate to be able test the newest technology in LED roadway lighting in downtown Greenville,” said Michael Kersky, economic development manager for the city of Greenville. The 35 LED fixtures, located in the city’s downtown area, will be evaluated for energy consumption, energy efficiency, illumination and visual appeal. There are currently about 1,400 existing mercury vapor streetlights in the downtown area. The challenge faced by the city of Greenville is that the mercury vapor fixtures in need of replacement are no longer manufactured. Energy supplier Duke Energy, of Charlotte, North Carolina, is leading the effort to introduce LED streetlights to the Greenville community. The city of Greenville currently budgets about $22,400 per month for the electicity supplied to the 1,400 downtown streetlights as well for streetlight maintenance.
“We are expecting a report and analysis from Duke Energy in about six months. The smart fixtures which are installed are transmitting a variety of data directly to Duke. This includes energy consumption, performance issues, and outages,” said Kersky. In order to complement the pedestrian friendly downtown zone, the Hubbell Lighting fixtures have been equipped with smart features such as movable shades and dimming capabilities. Feedback from citizens and the public is being sought by city officials. Updates on the LED streetlight pilot, as well as the performance report drafted by Duke Energy, will be available on the city’s LED streetlight pilot website at www.greeningofgreenville.com.
