A planned installation of 70 LED streetlights is the first deployment of energy efficient streetlighting for the village of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The LED streetlights will be used to replace existing traditional cobrahead roadway lights. The project is funded through the village general fund is expected to cost approximately $24,360. The village, in cooperation with Dobbs Ferry, New York, purchased LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by Philips Hadco, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania.

“This installation is effectively a pilot for our community to test the technology,” said Francis Frobel, village manager for the village of Hastings-on-Hudson. Village officials will assess the performance of the LED fixtures as well as gauge input from local residents. Before moving ahead with the larger installation, a small, two fixture demonstration, was installed. According to Frobel, the village anticipates annual energy savings of nearly $9,000 as a result of the seventy fixture installation and has calculated the payback at approximately three years. Future plans include replacing the remaining cobrahead streetlights with LED fixtures. The village currently owns and maintains about six hundred streetlights.

“Our streetlights are billed at a flat rate by the New York Power Authority based on the type of streetlight fixture. Our LED streetlights will be billed at a revised rate, reflective of the fixture, which will result in energy savings for the village,” said Frobel.

The village is also considering a retrofit of 75 existing decorative streetlights in the downtown area. The village would prefer to retrofit with LEDs rather than a full replacement of the fixtures. “The existing fixtures, poles and wiring are in perfect condition so we would prefer to only retrofit the lamp. We have not been able to find something that works for our needs and is cost effective. We are interested in finding a solution,” said Frobel.
