Hayward, California, prepares to install LED streetlight fixtures

The city of Hayward, California, recently completed a qualification of bidders for the city’s upcoming LED streetlight project. According to city officials, installation of new LED streetlight fixtures is already underway, and the city is looking to purchase an additional 62 fixtures for a proposed installation on Tennyson Road. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ), which closed on April 13, 2011, specified LED fixtures manufactured by Leotek, of Milpitas, California, however equivalent fixtures were also considered.
“We expect to begin installation in about three months,” said Majid Hafezieh, city traffic engineer for the city of Hayward. The LED streetlight fixtures will replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures which range from 200 to 400 watts. According to Hafezieh, the project location, a high pedestrian traffic area adjacent to a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, has traditionally been poorly illuminated. Following an analysis, officials determined that illumination needed to be increased to meet the needs of both drivers and pedestrians in the area. As a result, energy savings from the shift to energy efficient LED technology will not be as dramatic as typically seen in other installations. “We still expect to save about $200 each month with the new fixtures,” said Hafezieh.
Hayward currently owns and maintains about 7,500 streetlights, and the majority of these streetlights are HPS fixtures. According to city officials, based on available funding, the city may consider additional LED street light installations. The current project is funded by a US Department of Energy Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award of $70,000. The city is also eligible for rebates from energy supplier Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E).
