The city of Holdrege, Nebraska, plans to spend $343,029 on the first phase of an LED streetlight replacement project. The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program is providing $250,000 of the funds, and an additional $93,029 are local, matching funds. The EECBG award is locally administered by the Nebraska Energy Office (NEO).
City officials plan to replace approximately 470 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor streetlights with new LED streetlight fixtures. The existing HPS and mercury vapor streetlights slated for replacement are 150 watt and 250 watt fixtures. “LED streetlight technology continues to improve so we are hoping to replace even our 400 watt fixtures in the near future,” said Mark Schultz, utilities superintendent for the city of Holdrege. Because Holdrege is a municipal utility, the savings from the reduced energy consumption of the LED streetlights will be substantial. Initial calculations show the LED streetlight luminaires use approximately 50 percent of the elecricity of traditional roadway lights.
Based on availability of future funds, the long term goal of Holdrege is to replace all city-owned streetlights with LED fixtures. The city currently owns and maintains 1,152 streetlights.
The project start date is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010. According to Schultz, the city’s grant application specifies that LED streetlights manufactured by EcoFit Lighting are best suited to meet the performance and lighting requirements of the city of Holdrege. According to NEO guidelines, all award recipients are required to follow procurement procedures and competitively bid the projects. . © 2010 New Streetlights LED streetlight, LED streetlights, LED street light, LED street lights, LED streetlamp, LED streetlamps, LED street lamp, LED street lamps |
