First phase of $275,000 EECBG LED streetlight project in Huntington Beach, California, includes decorative fixtures from Sternberg Lighting

The city of Huntington Beach, California is in the midst of a first phase installation of LED streetlights in the city’s downtown corridor. The project is funded by a $275,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and will be implemented over two phases. The first phase includes the installation of approximately 50 LED acorn globe fixtures manufactured by Sternberg Lighting of Roselle, Illinois. The second phase of the energy efficient streetlight program will be initiated following the evaluation and analysis of the first installation.
“Our first project included installing acorn globe LED streetlights and control systems manufactured by Exergy Controls of Long Beach, California,” said Aaron Clem, energy project manager for the city of Huntington Beach. All of the retrofit fixtures were installed on city-owned and metered streetlights, so actual energy use and savings will be calculated following the evaluation period. In addition to the decorative fixtures, the city also installed LED streetlights in two parking lots and in locations requiring area lighting. The city’s energy supplier, Southern California Edison (SCE) now offers incentives for the installation of LED streetlights, which was not the case at the time of the first Huntington Beach installation, according to Clem.
“The entire project was bid out as a multi-phase project, but we may be adding an additional request for shoebox style LED fixtures, which would be bid as a separate project,” said Clem. The shoebox style fixtures would be installed in the city’s beachfront parking lots. About 90% of Huntington Beach streetlights are owned and maintained by SCE. The EECBG funded retrofits are only targeting city-owned and maintained streetlights, which total about 2,000. RFPs will be posted on the city’s website.
