Illuminating Engineering Society approves TM-21 standard to predict lumen maintenance of LEDs

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of North America recently approved TM-21, an industry standard for determining lumen maintenance prediction.
Predicting the true life of an LED lamp continues to be one of the significant challenges faced by potential customers of the energy efficient technology. Currently, most prospective LED fixture customers rely on LM-79 and LM-80 data to evaluate potential products. These data provide an industry standard for lumen maintenance for SSL systems and LED components.
However, recent developments have added an additional method which can be used to assess LED products. The TM-21 test method was developed by a team of industry experts from both manufacturers and US government laboratories. TM-21 establishes a method to make projections regarding the lumen maintenance of an LED, and this, in turn, can be used to the potential useful life of an LED luminaire.
The industry panel developing the test method included 6 manufacturers: Philips Lumileds, Osram, Nichia, Illumitex, GE, and Cree. The US Department of Energy participants included the Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The newly approved standard will create a level playing field for LED competitors to specify lumen maintenance behavior for their white LED products intended for illumination applications, according to Mark Hodapp, senior application engineer at Philips Lumileds.
