La Grange, North Carolina, to spend $194,445 on LED streetlights

The North Carolina Energy Office (NCEO) recently announced local awards of federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency projects in North Carolina. The town of La Grange, North Carolina, received $155,475 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The EECBG program is administered in North Carolina by the NCEO. The EECBG award will be used to purchase and install approximately 345 LED streetlights in the town of La Grange. Town officials expect total project cost to be about $194,445.
The La Grange LED streetlight project’s aim is to replace all of the town’s existing streetlight fixtures with energy efficient lighting. Currently, the majority of the town’s streetlights are high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor fixtures. The town also has approximately 42 decorative streetlights which are not targeted for replacement.
“We have been interested in deploying LED streetlights for some time but due to funding constraints have not been able to pursue it. This award will help us move toward our goal of reduced energy consumption and energy cost savings,” said John Craft, town manager for the town of La Grange. Craft anticipates reducing energy consumption by over 60%, resulting in significant budget savings for the town. “The town currently pays a flat rate to the municipal utility based on the calculated energy consumption of the streetlight fixture,” said Craft. The annual streetlight budget for La Grange is $55,000.
A request for proposals (RFP) for the purchase of LED streetlight fixtures is being prepared and will be issued as soon as it is complete. Craft anticipates issuing the RFP within the next two months. The RFP will be posted on the town of La Grange website or will be mailed to interested parties who contact the town directly.
