Lacey, Washington, installs 44 LED streetlights from GE Lighting

The city of Lacey, Washington, has initiated the process of testing and evaluating LED streetlight technology. The city has installed 44 LED streetlights manufactured by GE Lighting. The 200 watt equivalent fixtures are mounted at a height of 30 feet. The city of Lacey previously deployed a small test installation of GE LED streetlight fixtures on a shared use trail. The larger project was funded by a grant from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board.
In response to a city government mandate to reduce energy consumption, public works officials replaced all city traffic signals with LED traffic lights. Deploying energy efficient lighting along the community’s roadways is Lacey’s next long-term initiative. The city currently owns and maintains about 3,000 streetlights. Puget Sound Energy, an investor-owned utility, supplies power to the city. The city of Lacey is also a 100% “green power” community, which results in slightly higher energy costs.
“The pilot installation is completely metered to help us determine the actual energy consumption of the LED streetlights,” said Pat McGuin, transportation engineer for the city of Lacey. McGuin indicated that Puget Sound Energy has been very supportive of the project and is working on a revised tariff structure to reflect the lower energy consumption of the LED fixtures. Initial public response to the LED streetlight installation has been very positive. “The community likes the color and the quality of the light from the new fixtures,” said McGuin.
