Lawrence, Kansas, to use $209,000 EECBG award for LED streetlights

The city of Lawrence, Kansas, plans to install LED streetlights in its downtown areas using money awarded by a federal grant program. City officials plan to upgrade existing, decorative streetlights in downtown Lawrence with LED fixtures. The project’s funding comes from a $209,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The installation of up to one hundred LED streetlights will be located primarily on Massachusetts Street with a few fixtures installed on New Hampshire Street.
“We already have a few LED fixtures up in pilots but have not made any decisions about the exact type of fixture we are looking for,” said Steve Bennett, buildings and structures manager for the city of Lawrence. The city is currently considering decorative LED fixtures and is also evaluating traditional roadway fixtures. Officials are particularly interested in the potential energy savings created by the LED technology. “Our pilots and new LED streetlight installations have already demonstrated energy savings, especially compared to our mercury vapor fixtures,” said Bennett. The EECBG-funded installation will replace existing streetlight fixtures and will not require replacement of poles or wiring. However, new poles and LED fixtures are now required in all new developments in the city of Lawrence.
Final details of the EECBG project are expected around mid-February. “We will follow our existing streetlighting standards, and this project will require some design,” said Bennett. A request for proposals (RFP) is anticipated for the project and will most likely be issued in February or March. RFPs are published on the city of Lawrence website.
