Lemon Grove, California, receives $132,374 from EECBG for LED streetlights

The city of Lemon Grove, California, has been awarded $132,374 in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds for an energy efficient streetlight replacement project. The EECBG award is administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The award will be used to replace 145 existing high and low pressure sodium and mercury vapor streetlights located on major arterial roadways. Lemon Grove owns, maintains and operates the city’s streetlights.
City officials are currently evaluating both LED and induction streetlights for the streetlight replacement project. According to Cora Long, management analyst for the city of Lemon Grove, “At this point we are leaning more toward LED technology, but we are interested in learning what other area communities have experienced.” Lemon Grove is a participant in an informal consortium of approximately twelve San Diego-area communities which meets to discuss challenges, standards and compare experiences with energy efficient street lighting.
According to Long, Lemon Grove will issue a request for proposals (RFP) within two to three months of receiving the EECBG award. The RFP will be advertised on the Ebid board. local newspapers, and on the city of Lemon Grove’s website. “The contract should be awarded to the successful bidder within four to five months following our receipt of the EECBG award,” said Long.
