The city of Lemoore, California, has received $136,469 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The award will be used to replace approximately 250 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures.
The LED streetlights will be deployed in the general vicinity of northeastern Lemoore neighborhoods, according to city analysts. “The neighborhoods are poorly lit, which is why we are focusing the project there,” said Lauren Apone, administrative analyst for the city of Lemoore. The initial lighting analysis specified that luminaires with 20 LEDs were sufficient for the project, but because of insufficient existing lighting, Lemoore city officials determined that luminaires with 30 LEDs would be more appropriate. The new LED streetlights will replace existing 70 watt HPS fixtures.
“The EECBG award will be used to replace mostly city-owned streetlights,” said Apone. Additional streetlights are owned and maintained by the city’s power supplier, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E).
Lemoore will be utilizing PG&E’s “turnkey” program for the EECBG funded project. This program includes the purchase, installation and maintenance of LED streetlight fixtures. PG&E offers a rebate program to cities installing LED streetlights, as well as a revised tariff structure to reflect the reduced energy consumption of LED luminaires. Installation is expected to being by December 2010.
