Lewes, Delaware, awarded EECBG funds for LED streetlights

The city of Lewes, Delaware, is preparing to deploy its first installation of LED streetlights in a small pilot program which will test energy efficient streetlight technology. The city was awarded $500,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and will use about $20,000 to fund the pilot installation. Lewes city officials plan on purchasing and installing around twelve LED streetlight fixtures.
“We are looking to this LED streetlight pilot to help us accurately assess savings and calculate the return on investment,” said Darrin Gordon, assistant general manager of the Lewes board of public works. The pilot will also help public works officials determine whether the city will seek additional funding for future installations. The city currently owns and maintains about 350 low pressure sodium, high pressure sodium, and metal halide streetlights. As a municipal utility, the city anticipates saving energy and money by switching to LED streetlights.
According to Gordon, the city has a mandate to be a “green city,” and energy efficient streetlights will help the community move in the direction of reduced energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emission. Industry claims indicate that LED streetlight installations can result in up to 50% lower energy consumption, in part as a result of correct illumination levels.
A request for proposals (RFP) will be issued for the purchase of the LED streetlight fixtures for the Lewes pilot. RFPs are published on the city’s website. According to Gordon, the date of issue is not yet known, but according to EECBG guidelines, the project should be completed within 2011.
