Lincoln, California, to use $171,000 EECBG grant for LED streetlights

Lincoln, California, plans to install about 235 energy efficient LED streetlights using federal funds.
The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program award of $171,000 will fund the purchase and installation of approximately two hundred and thirty five new LED streetlights which will replace existing streetlight fixtures. The city will use LED roadway streetlights manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting, of Racine, Wisconsin.
According to city officials, this upcoming streetlight installation will be the first for Lincoln. The city is participating in the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) turnkey program which enables the city to purchase a significantly larger number of fixtures and also qualifies them for rebates and a revised tariff which reflects the lower energy consumption of LED streetlight luminaires. Initially, only city-owned streetlights will be replaced. “The installations will take place in various older neighborhoods throughout the city,” said Dan Clark, senior engineer for the city of Lincoln.
Based on the city’s annual energy usage, city officials expect the two hundred and thirty five new LED fixtures to potentially save up to $9,433 per year, said Clark. The 56 watt equivalent LED fixtures will replace existing 100 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head streetlights. In addition to energy cost savings, the city also anticipates a reduction in maintenance costs due to the longer life of the energy efficient fixtures. Lincoln does not currently have any plans for any additional installations.
