Marion, Iowa, installs LED streetlights in pilot project

The city of Marion, Iowa, has undertaken its first installation of LED streetlights in a project using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. The LED streetlight installation is part of a larger $371,360 roadway widening and improvement project. The pilot installation consists of 10 LED streetlight fixtures located at two intersections, South 22nd Street and Tama Street, along Highway 100.
“This is our first installation of LED streetlights, and we view it as a pilot to test the reliability of performance of the fixtures,” said Ryan Miller, department of public services for the city of Marion. The LED streetlight fixtures were installed in November 2010, and their performance will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. According to city officials, the energy efficient fixtures are expected to use up to 30% less energy than the existing 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures currently installed.
“Public feedback has been very positive,” said Miller. The success of the installation will help city officials determine whether they will pursue additional energy efficient streetlight installations throughout the city of Marion. The city currently owns and maintains approximately 5,000 streetlights.
