McKinney, Texas, uses $90,000 EECBG award to purchase LED streetlights from Philips Hadco

The city of McKinney, Texas, has initiated the process of converting existing streetlights to LED technology. Up to 97 city-owned, high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights will be replaced with Philips Hadco LED fixtures. The city was awarded $90,000 from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The award is locally administered by the Texas State Energy Conservation Office (SECO).
“The city council approved this project in January, and we are eager to move forward with the streetlight conversion,” said Julie Smith, manager for the office of environmental stewardship for the city of McKinney. The city will use its own crews for the installation, thereby maximizing EECBG funds to buy as many fixtures as possible. The new LED streetlights will be located on Virginia Parkway, the city’s main east-west corridor and US 380, a four lane divided roadway. “We anticipate saving about $58,000 in costs over the lifetime of the LED fixture, but our largest savings will be the reduction of maintenance costs,” said Smith.
The initiative to replace HPS streetlights with energy saving LED technology is consistent with the city of McKinney’s goals to reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The city’s Green Team has developed a carbon footprint plan for the city and identified several projects which will help McKinney reach its environmental goals.
