Melrose, Massachusetts, installs Osram Sylvania LED streetlights to meet city’s energy savings goals

A pilot effort focused on the installation of LED streetlights is now underway in the city of Melrose, Massachusetts. The the state of Massachusetts Green Community Program mandates that the city reduce energy consumption by 20 percent within the next five years. City officials feel that deployment of LED streetlights is one of the best methods to achieve that goal. The city will install approximately 80 new decorative LED streetlights on downtown Main Street. The LED streetlight fixtures are manufactured by Osram Sylvania of Danvers, Massachusetts, and will replace existing metal halide fixtures.
“We are only focusing on our city’s decorative streetlights because those are the only streetlights in the city that are metered. We chose the Osram Sylvania decorative LED fixture because it was the only one in the style we wanted, approved by the Design Lights Consortium, and also a full retrofit kit,” said Martha Grover, energy efficiency manager for the city of Melrose. Although the city owns and maintains all of its streetlights, only decorative fixtures are billed for energy consumed. The remaining cobrahead streetlights are billed at a flat rate. Currently, National Grid, the city’s energy provider, does not recognize LED technology in its rate tariff. City officials expressed frustration at the delay in creating the revised tariff, and hope that the issue will soon be resolved.
“We now have six of the new LED fixtures in a pilot installation and are looking for citizen input and feedback,” said Grover. In addition to energy savings, Grover is also concerned with maintaining the look and ambiance of Main Street. “These LED fixtures help us maintain that look,” said Grover. The city currently pays about $12,800 per year for 117 decorative streetlights. Initial calculations indicate that lower energy consuming LED streetlights may reduce the annual amount by nearly $9,000. Citzens are encouraged to contact Martha Grover at mgrover@cityofmelrose.org.
